Hand Hygiene: Staying Healthy in the Hospital
At BID Needham, we use best practices to prevent patients from developing infections in the hospital. The most important measure is good hand washing. Cleaning hands before and after caring for patients is a standard of care in all health care institutions. We encourage you to ask your health care team if they washed their hands.
We recommend the following steps:
- Hand sanitizer. We provide dispensers of alcohol-based hand sanitizers at the entrance to and inside each patient room, and in the hallways throughout the hospital.
- Patients. You should wash your hands before eating and drinking, and after using the toilet or bedpan.
- Visitors. All visitors should clean their hands when they enter and leave your room. Wash hands with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer when entering the hospital, and before entering and after visiting a patient’s room.
