Medication Disposal
Safely discard unused or unwanted medicines
Medsafe Kiosk for Safe Drug Disposal
If you need to dispose of personal prescriptions or expired medications, Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Needham can help. Use our anonymous and free medicine kiosk to get rid of prescription drugs and opioids.
Reducing Medicine Misuse
Our goal is to decrease accidental, intentional and unintentional drug misuse, and to help address the opioid epidemic.
The drug kiosk also reduces improper medication disposal, such as flushing into the water stream.
The medsafe kiosks do not accept:
- Illegal drugs
- Liquids in quantities greater than 4 ounces
- Needles, including epi-pens
Medical Sharps: Needles, Syringes, Lancets
BID Needham also offers a sharps disposal kiosk for the safe disposal of medical sharps.
Medical sharps include hypodermic needles, syringes, and lancets. They are typically used in the home to treat people and animals with diabetes and other chronic diseases such as allergies, arthritis, osteoporosis, multiple sclerosis, hepatitis B, and HIV.
All sharps must be placed in a sharps disposal container before being placed in the kiosk. It is preferable to purchase a sharps disposal container from a pharmacy, but rigid plastic containers, such as a laundry detergent container, will be accepted. Please seal securely before placing in the disposal kiosk.
Do not store or dispose of used sharps in glass bottles, soda bottles, milk jugs, aluminum cans, or coffee cans.
Kiosk and Other Disposal Locations
The drug and sharps disposal kiosks are in the main lobby of BID Needham, near the entrance at the 148 Chestnut St.
A second drug disposal kiosk can be found at the town of Needham Police Department.
