Refer a Patient To the Hospitalist Program
Expert inpatient care for your patients
Hospitalist Referrals to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Needham
The BID Needham hospitalist program bridges the gap between patients’ primary care providers (PCPs) and specialists, providing comprehensive inpatient care and seamless communication between providers.
Our hospitalists cover medical admissions 24 hours a day, seven days a week for the PCPs who elect to use the hospitalist service.
We strive to build both therapeutic, long-term relationships with patients and highly collaborative relationships with their PCPs. Our hospitalist referral model allows us to develop a true partnership with providers. By working together and holding one another accountable, we can provide the best possible care for our patients.
About Hospitalist Referrals
When you refer a patient through the BID Needham Hospitalist Program, you can expect:
- Hospitalists who are Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certified, board certified or certification eligible in internal medicine, and who have completed mandatory continuing education for BID Needham employees.
- Hospitalists who respond to inpatient emergencies for all patients, regardless of the admitting physician.
- Exclusive coverage from Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians.
- Around-the-clock, year-round coverage for your patients.
Hospitalists are also available to facilitate direct admissions to BID Needham so that patients can avoid a trip to the emergency department. Please note that it is BID Needham policy that the PCP or specialist physician needs to have seen the patient within the past 24 hours for the patient to qualify for direct admission.
- On the day of admission, we send an email to the PCP.
- If there is a significant change in status or if family issues arise, we will send an update email to the PCP.
- When the patient is discharged, we send a dictated discharge summary, in addition to a phone call or email update to the PCP.
The BID Needham Hospitalist Program is closely linked with BIDMC in Boston. If your patient needs to be transferred to a tertiary care hospital, they get priority in bed availability.
