We provide comprehensive care when you’re an inpatient, as well as after you leave the hospital. Our therapy team collaborates with your primary care doctor to provide the best plan of care. We partner with specialists in heart and vascular care, lung and respiratory care and orthopedics.
At each outpatient therapy visit, a licensed physical therapist (PT) or occupational therapist (OT) provides you with ongoing assessment and education. Together with other experts involved in your care, we create and carry out a personalized, one-on-one care plan to meet your recovery goals.
Physical therapists at BID Needham focus on the treatment of orthopedic and sports-related injuries. Our occupational therapists are certified (or certified-eligible) hand therapists. We specialize in the treatment of problems related to the hand, wrist and elbow.
Our speech therapy services are primarily offered during your hospital stay. If you need an outpatient swallowing study, we can coordinate that test with the BID Needham radiology team.
Depending on your needs, you may see physical therapists, occupational therapists or speech-language pathologists during your stay. The primary role of therapy during an inpatient stay is to evaluate patients who’ve had a recent change in their ability to carry out activities of daily living (ADLs) such as walking, dressing, swallowing or talking.
After the evaluation, the therapist may recommend ongoing treatment. This may include rehab after hospital discharge, equipment needs and diet modifications for swallowing issues.
At the first visit, your PT or OT will ask about your goals, perform an exam and work with you to design a treatment plan that meets your needs. Together, you’ll discuss the frequency and timing of follow-up visits, which are generally one or two times a week for several weeks.
Wear loose-fitting, casual clothing that allows you to move comfortably or is easy to remove. Shorts are best to wear for leg or back problems. Tank tops are best for hand therapy. We also offer hospital gowns, if you would like to wear one during your session.
