LungHealth: Lung Cancer Screening in Needham
If you have a history of smoking, you could be at risk for lung cancer. The good news is that early detection can significantly increase your chances of survival. Through Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), BID Needham offers LungHealth, our cancer screening program, to patients who are at risk for lung cancer.
LungHealth uses low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) examinations to safely screen patients for cancer. As a cost-effective screening procedure that uses minimal radiation, LCDT is proven to detect lung cancer early at little risk to you.
Eligibility Requirements
To receive lung cancer screening at BID Needham, you must:
- Be between 50 and 80 years old
- Have a history of smoking one pack per day for 20 years
- Are a current smoker (or quit within the last 15 years)
You do not need to be experiencing symptoms of lung cancer to undergo screening.
Expert Detection & Prevention Tool
The American Lung Association, American Cancer Society and the US Preventive Services Task Force support annual screenings for people at high risk for lung cancer. BID Needham uses best practices for CT scanning, which includes using low dose scans to minimize your radiation exposure.
