Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Needham Receives $20 Million Gift
Largest Gift in Hospital’s History Launches New Comprehensive Campaign
Needham, MA — Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Needham (BID Needham) today announced a $20 million gift from grateful patient Valerie Trotman and family. This gift is the largest donation in the history of the hospital and will establish the Trotman Family Campus Transformation Fund. The family’s generous commitment serves as the catalyst for a $40 million, multi-year philanthropic campaign to support BID Needham’s bold vision for the future.
“We would like to express our immense gratitude to Valerie Trotman and her family for this historic and transformational gift,” said John Fogarty, president, BID Needham. “Philanthropy gives the hospital the space to innovate and to dream; now is the time for communities to invest in their local hospital. This generous gift will be used to meet the rising demand for patient-centered care in the community with both urgency and creativity. We thank the Trotman family for their unwavering support for BID Needham, our extraordinary staff, the patients and families we serve.”
Past support from the Trotman family has allowed the hospital to pursue several projects to enhance care in the community including expanding the Intensive Care Unit, increasing behavioral health services, and building the Lank Cancer Center and the Surgical Pavilion.
“The growth of BID Needham over the last decade has been remarkable,” said Valerie Trotman. “I believe this success is a testament to the strength of its leadership – John Fogarty, Samantha Sherman, and others – who are deeply committed to making more types of clinical care and medical services available close to home. What keeps me connected is the hospital’s inspiring vision for the future, building on its past achievements, and I want to be part of that journey. It brings me great joy to support BID Needham and help turn this vision into a reality. My hope is that others will join me.”
With the foundation of this gift, BID Needham launched the “Transforming Health Care Here” comprehensive campaign. The campaign’s goal is to raise $40 million to support BID Needham’s mission of providing extraordinary care in the community.
“A gift of this magnitude is a rarity for a community hospital. It continues to be an honor to work with Val, her commitment to the hospital and to ensuring care is available in our community is unparalleled,” said Samantha Sherman, Division Vice President, Community Hospitals for Beth Israel Lahey Health. “This is philanthropy at its best – combining strategic thinking, strong leadership, and meaningful investment to transform lives. Thanks to Val’s visionary support, we have an opportunity to reshape health care right here. We have the roadmap for growth, and with additional philanthropic support we can ensure that BID Needham meets the needs of our patients today, tomorrow, and for decades to come.”
