Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

Healthier communities driven by excellence, innovation and equity

Exceptional Care for Everyone

At Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Needham, we’re shaping the future of health care – and that means creating medical equity for both our patients and employees.

As part of Beth Israel Lahey Health, our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) vision is to transform care delivery by dismantling barriers to equitable health outcomes and becoming the premier health system to attract, retain, and develop diverse talent.

Our team is comprised of a diverse group of health care professionals. United by the desire to improve the lives of others, our staff members come from all walks of life and use their experiences to provide patients with care that honors their social, cultural, and language needs.

Inclusive, Equitable Care

We’re committed to providing our patients with inclusive, equitable care, regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, disability status or financial situation. No matter your needs, you deserve dignified, personalized care.

Gender-Affirming Programs and Services

Workplace Equity

Building and Sustaining a Diverse Workforce

We know the importance of having a workforce that mirrors the increasing diversity in the communities that BILH serves. We’re actively working to build representation of Black and Indigenous people of color and women among our leadership and our workforce through hiring and offering development programs to offer support and opportunities for growth.

Workplace equity is critical for fostering a working environment where employees can grow, develop their skills, and feel valued and respected. We have policies and procedures to protect all employees from discrimination and a fair and balanced approach to work responsibility.

BID Needham participates in robust employee engagement surveys with a significant focus on diversity, equity and inclusion questions.

Creating an Inclusive Workplace Through Policies and Training

An important piece of workplace equity and providing culturally competent care is enabling both large-scale and focused training for employees. BID Needham uses LinkedIn Learning which includes significant DEI learning modules for all employees.

Health Equity

Improving Access to Care and Reducing Health Disparities

Everyone deserves the same access to healthcare services, regardless of their background, identity, or social situation. Health equity means looking at the effects of an individual’s race, sex, gender identity, sexuality, income, social location, etc. and then seeing how these characteristics can affect their access to healthcare. Health equity aims to reduce existing health disparities and ensure a more equitable distribution of resources in areas like preventive care, diagnosis, treatment and access to coverage.

This idea is at the core of our mission and embedded in everything we do. We are advancing that mission through multiple strategies to eradicate health disparities and measuring progress to help us move closer to this important goal.

We strive to improve health for our patient population with sensitivity towards race, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, socioeconomic status, preferred language, or other aspect of identity.

Economic Inclusion

Addressing Economic Inequality: Our Pledge to Make a Difference

BID Needham and BILH have established a supplier diversity program to expand contracts with minority-owned businesses and women-owned businesses. We're working to expand investments in underrepresented communities to close socio-economic disparities that impact population health analytics infrastructure and dedicated resources.

Choosing diverse vendors and suppliers is part of our commitment to addressing economic inequality. We encourage diverse suppliers to register for our inclusion program by emailing us for more information.
